Epiphany @ Oggi’s– Yes, it hurt.

Why is it that the rest of the world hates Americans?

Sure, it’s a loaded question. We could argue all day on the merits of the assumption, but regardless, of your logical reasoning critiques there’s an honesty to the perception. It’s in that healthy level of animosity that exists between the U.S. and, um, everyone else.

Some like to say they envy us for our power.

Yesterday afternoon, I sat down to a soggy pizza and a dark candy ale (which, I’m told, is the way they like it in Scotland) at Oggi’s in Orange, and as I glanced at the menu, something a little different occurred to me– that is in regard to the rest of the world hating us:

I’m no International Relations / Anthropological-Psychology guru… but, I think this might have something to do with it.

The Leaning Tower of… BEER!

Of course, it could have been the mulleted moron at the bar cheering the Falcons at the top of his lungs– hootin’, clappin’, hollarin’, and pretty much just assaulting my senses with his every breath of existence –that put me in such a foul mood.

Oggi’s might as well put his picture on the menu.

Anyway, the beer is probably the only redeeming quality for the place– that is if you’re into that hopsy, malty, “Ooo, this ale registers an immediate sweetness with satisfying mouthfeel” foo-foo crap.

The ‘Niners lost, the food was unsatisfying– and if you’re ever wondering why the world hates Americans, check the menu.

I agree that we bastardized other culture’s icons at the sake of marketing. But this is only because we’re just so damn ignorant of other world cultures here. Anyways, we have an Oggi’s here in HB too. I like to call it a 2nd rate BJ’s Pizza.

I was shepherding a British friend around town the week before last. We walked out from the mall on Hollywood Blvd. to be confronted with one of those huge billboards advertising “The Ten Commandments: The Musical.” In disbelief, she snapped a picture of it and declared, “That’s why the rest of the world hates Americans.” Sadly, I could only agree.
