Hammer(ed) and Sickle at the OC Weekly

Commie Girl has left the building.

No really, she just left Memphis about an hour ago and yes she really did leave the Weekly.

According to the LA Times, The Liberal OC, and the OC Register’s Frank Mickadeit it’s official: She gave two weeks notice just to be escorted out of the building an hour later.

The OC Weekly printed her final column and it really is hard to believe that this is really her last column. I always found her columns as a great source of local political news, wit, and humor that could be delivered only in the Commie Girl writing style. At tonight’s OC Drinking Liberally (held every Thursday at 8:30pm Memphis, Santa Ana) we all got to reminisce with Commie Girl and we took a group picture with our fellow “comrades.”

All of us here at the OC Metroblog wish Rebecca Schoenkopf the best of luck in her future endeavors. If you ever want to join us in the blogging world, we will always have a spot open for you here on the Metroblog.

What’s going on with the dramatic exits over there? First Will Swaim and now this?

    They’ll both be missed.

Village Voice Media (which owns a lot of the weeklies of that type) merged with New Times Newspapers in 2006, and Swaim had some “philosophical differences” with the new leadership at the parent company.

Lots of people are leaving the old VV papers (which is commendable if you disagree with management), but I haven’t heard of any place to find them all, so it’s a loss in that regard.

Many of you may not remember but Commie Girl was one of this blog’s earliest fans!
