I Heart OC

I’m back from a vay-cay in the lovely Bay Area. I love the Bay Area, the beautiful trees, the easy-going vibe; there are lots of things to like. For a year I went to school and lived in Northern California, but I was too much of a SoCal girl at heart to be able to be truly happy there.

Am I totally biased in saying that I just love Orange County?

Despite the traffic and the hot weather and all the dang people everywhere, I’m glad to be back.

What is it about the OC that makes you glad to live here?

I’m a bi-Californian. There’s lots to love in OC, especially south OC (my particular bias). The weather is the most obvious reason, but south OC is verrry laid back. A former San Franciscan who thought I’d never want to live anywhere else, I’ve settled in here nicely because I have kids now. The Bay Area sure is beautiful, but I wouldn’t say the vibe is more easy-going up there. And I think it’s harder to raise kids, especially in The City. The beach life is the way to go.

It’s hard to get past the weather, and this is coming from someone who’s spent almost no time in places with much crappier weather. It’s one of those things I know without having to experience the rest – no snow, few days with high humidity, not a lot of rain, and fairly consistent days (weather doesn’t usually change radically during the course of the day).

Otherwise, the whole LA metro area has the perks of cultural variety and things to do – there aren’t too many other places on Earth where I’m less than a 50 mile drive from nearly every ethnic food on the planet. And while I don’t utilize a lot of high culture events, I very much like knowing they’re available to me, with an amazing variety.

Well, I have a love-hate relationship with the OC.

Living here long enough, I like the laid back aspects of life in Orange County, the weather, and the attractions have all been a plus.

Awesome sports teams! Both the Ducks and the Angels make me proud to say I live in Anaheim of Orange County.

As for the opposite end of the spectrum, the politics and conservative views of some tend to lean towards the Libertarian instead of the Conservative Republican. Having to deal with this in my early years of living in the OC, I have become used to getting the cold stare or the “get out” speech that so many in some parts of the County like to give to “outsiders” even when I live here.

But on the plus side, the politics of the OC have been changing for quite some time. The solid red is now leaning towards a light blue in some parts of the OC.
