Paint Your Wagon!

God forgive me I will soon be migrating to dwell in South County.

In the next month or two I shall grace Irvine with my overwhelming progressive super-tolerant uber-liberal presence. God’s not the only one who has to forgive me; I have friends that act like I am committing some sort of unforgivable sin by heading south. It’s not like I am moving to Moreno Valley or something – which, for the record is an unforgivable sin. Sheesh!

Why all the hatin’ people? Is really that bad? Besides, we need more south county bloggers. Is there some hidden evil secret about south OC that I am unaware of?

I had no idea north vs south (county) was an issue until El Toro. ‘Wouldn’t everyone in OC love avoiding LAX?’ I so naively thought. Now I’m aware of the concept, but still struggle with the details.

For example, is Santa Ana north county or south? It takes me about 6 minutes to get to Irvine from where I live in SA, so I’m not sure. Do “southerners” have a different accent perhaps? Are there even more variations I should be aware of, like west south county, or upper north county? Maybe a Google map mashup could help.

I mean, I used to have trouble getting my friends and relatives back home to realize that OC was not LA! Thank you Fox and McG for clearing up that problem. But now I have to start the education process all over. “No ma, I live in NORTH Orange County. It’s kinda like North Dakota and South Dakota. No ma, I don’t know the difference between those two either. Ok, it’s like this. There are these two malls, The Block and The Spectrum. North County goes to The Block, South County goes to the Spectrum. Which one do I go to? Oh, The District, just opened up. I dunno ma, I’m confused too.” Yeah, that’ll be fun.

Ha! I’m with you, I never knew there was such an issue till my friends had a cow when I announced I was moving.

Speaking of the The District at Tustin Legacy… what a terrible name. The new AMC theater is quite nice and I am sure there is already a line for Pinkberry even though it hasn’t even been built yet.

Good luck on your move, Jon. It’s always so stressful, no matter where you are going.

I’m a dyed-in-the-wool North Countian (from Buena Park/Fullerton), but I wouldn’t say moving south is an unforgivable sin, just a shame.

Everyone who’s not from California’s Orange County thinks it’s like that TV show, and that isn’t right–except coastal south Orange County IS like that. My sister lives in Newport Coast and she couldn’t be happier living the O.C. life. I, on the other hand, while I love my sister and think she’s great, couldn’t want that life less.

P.S. To CinOC: North Countians go to the Brea Mall, not the Spectrum. ;)
