Bad Santa

Last week, we went to Disneyland, looking to perhaps take a photo for our Christmas card. And actually, we don’t do a family photo because we figure, everybody knows what we look like, they want to see the boy. So we try to make people happy. We’re all about the happy.

Two places I normally go to for Santa photos have great Santas. The beards are real, the eyebrows are real, the tummy, everything.

I thought to myself, and compared to those guys, how much better is the Santa at Disneyland going to be? I mean, it’s Disney, where everything is perfect all the time. So I chortled to myself, thinking we were going to get a picture with the uber-Santa. The Santa to end all Santas.

After standing in line for over a half hour, we finally get a glimpse of the man who is supposed to provide me with THE photo.

Can you say, fake beard? Can you say, white clown makeup on the eyebrows? Can you say young guy pretending to be old Santa? Add to that, I swear he looks drunk in the photos. I’m not saying he was actually drunk, but he sure looks like he tossed back a few too many spiked eggnogs.

I was crushed.

Disney, who can make anything look real, gave me a fake Santa.

Sorry you had a bad santa experience! I work with the photos from the parks and have seen some really awesome ones and some kind of questionable ones (today especially). You could always try again!

The last time I had a photo taken as a kid with "Santa," the guy was this skinny bald man with what appeared to be sparse wet cotton barely attached to his chin. It had been storming out, so in the picture I also look like a drenched rat in a baby blue pleather jacket.

That must have been the year I figured it all out.

That’s funny! When I was a kid, the Santas with the real beards were the ones that I thought looked funny.

I had gotten so used to the large fluffy beards from the Santas at Fredrick & Nelson that by the the time I saw a "real" version I was perplexed.

As for you recent Disneyland experience: my your expectations are high! Course that could just be my point of view (from the inside looking out).

The santa that appears at the Brea Mall is usually pretty authentic looking. We take my son to see him every year (he’s 4 now) and it’s been the same guy playing santa every year so far. I’ve always had good ‘santa experiences’ in Vegas too.

Disney usually has high standards on this type of thing. Maybe the scheduled santa called in sick or something?
