This year marks the 100th Annual Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade. This years theme is “100 years of Christmas Cheer.” A map of the parade route (which has changed from previous years) can be downloaded here.
To kick off this years celebration, there will be a fireworks display launching from the Balboa Pier at approximately 6:25 p.m. on Wednesday December 17th, 2008.

Thanks to Jessica at the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce and John Blom Photography for providing the photos in this article.
In addition to the boats parading, houses in the harbor get in on the action for the annual “Ring of Lights” competition. There are residents on Balboa Island that I know have separate off site storage units just to house the extravagant display that they install this time of year.
I have a love/hate relationship with the boat parade season. Having used to live on Balboa Island, I hated having to keep people from parking behind may garage and in my parking space, while simultaneously loving watching the parade and the holiday spirit that took over the island. For those who are coming from out of the area, there are many options on where to watch the parade. Some of those places are listed here. There are plenty of free viewing areas, but some locations may have cover charges (like the restaurants or yacht clubs.) Make sure to plan ahead. Reserved seating and dinner reservations are scarce at this time of year. Also give yourself plenty of time to find parking. Most of all be safe.
If you have not seen the parade, or walked the harbor at Christmas time, I highly recommend bundling up, grabbing a cup of cocoa, and enjoying it first hand.
