Carona Gets Off (Almost) Scot-Free

Fomer OC Sheriff Mike Carona has been aquitted of five of the six charges against him in the corruption case that has gripped OC for much too long now.

The only count he was found guilty on by a jury was one felony of witness tampering, for which he could serve up to 10 years. However, they will appeal that and will most likely get some sort of time-served sort of thing, because how problematic is that, to have the former head of law enforcement in prison? He’d almost have to be in total isolation.

But I have to say, I’m not surprised at the verdict.

Every time I see someone go to court in what seems like an open-and-shut case of the guilties, they wind up with the cliched slap on the wrist.

But, I wasn’t in the courtroom and did not hear the evidence, so I can’t make a judgement on how well the jury took the facts presented into account when deliberating. But it took them only 32 hours to come to a verdict on a case with 58 witnesses and which took two months.

Damn, it almost makes me want to go to jury duty.
