Cal State Fullerton’s Tuffy is Toast

tuffy

Gary Robbins reports that Cal State Fullerton has officially fired Tuffy the Titan, the school mascot for over fifty years.  Tuffy was a prominent part of the University’s identity, as Tuffy was featured on almost everything.  Well, Tuffy will still be featured at sporting events, since it’s pretty hard to get inspired by a tree, which is part of the new logo.

The reason Fullerton chose an elephant as a mascot is due to the fact that early in the school’s history, some silly elephant races were held on the fields that are now the Student Union buildings.

As many commenters on the Register noted, I’m suprised that in the budgetary crisis we have, CSUF can justify all the money it will take to change the logo.  Guess that’s what those fee increases were for!

So, now Tuffy is gone, replaced by an extremely generic looking logo.  Ugh.

Well this will prolly make PETA happy. :) I like the elephant. The tree of learning of knowledge is kinda lame if you ask me. Course my mascot is better… I’ve got Panther Pride! :)

I don’t think it’s costing that much…at least that’s what Pres. Gordon told the Daily Titan…
can’t find the link to the interview…here’s the Web site:

But I know I read it in their paper!

Is this because they are embarrassed about their past? This seems like an excellent opportunity to address the injustice many captive elephants face. They could start a conservation fund maybe. It would be an excellent opportunity to learn from the past rather than pretending it never happened.

Hey I went to CSUF and liked the elephant — shows a little strength. While the trees are also strong and we can always use more, it’s funny how their arboretum has lost most of its trees somehow…

I dont really care for the way the new logo looks. I read the interview too, and I got the feeling that President Gordon was trying to step away from the history of elephants and felt kind of embarrassed by it.As if prospective students dont take the school serously because of the elephant, but what does that say about all the students that come here now?

And about the cost, President Gordon mentioned that “now” was a more cost efficient time to come out with a new logo because they had to print all new business cards, etc. because of the area code change, so good thinking there at least.

Still gonna miss the elephant though. :[
