Pray to the Rally Monkey

Because if there was ever a time to do it, it would be today.

The Angels continue their unfortunate tradition of kicking butt during the regular season, and falling apart in the postseason.

It’s do or die in Boston today.

Congrats to Frankie!

He did it.

Frank Rodriguez of the Angels broke the single season record for saves, with 58.

Now the ball he used and his jersey will be on their way to Cooperstown.

Let’s cross our fingers that the Angels can cap this fantastic season off with a World Series win to get ring number two.

Angels Clinch Playoff Spot!

They’ve won their fourth AL West Title in five years. Whooo-hoooo!

They are the first team in the majors to clinch a playoff spot, and still maintain the best record in baseball.

Again, do we Orange Countians give a rat’s ass (ahem, no reference to prior problems intended) if they are supposedly the least popular team in the MLB? No way baby, just keep bringing those titles home!

Jason Lezak Made it Possible

That’s right, in case you haven’t been paying attention for the last month, Michael Phelps won like a bazillion medals and he would not have been able to set that record if not for the hard work of Orange County’s own Jason Lezak.

Wait. Who? Well I guess that’s the point really. Michael Phelps ended up on a cereal box and Jason flew back from the Olympics in coach. For fuck’s sake I don’t even fly coach and I’m a nobody. Come on people, he’s a champion, the least you could do is give the man some leg room! Anyway, for those who either don’t know or don’t care, he was the guy who swam the final leg of the 400-meter freestyle relay. He was behind and somehow managed to bring his team to victory by a mere 0.08 seconds. In other words he rocked it OC style!

The LA Times has a nice article about Irvine’s unsung hero and ok, so he hasn’t been totally neglected. He did appear on Oprah and he did get a new car as a gift and what was that other thing he did again? Oh yeah, he won a gold medal at the Olympics. He’s a year younger than me ya know? What have I done? He swam to victory while I, by comparison, sat on the couch eating Pinkberry watching him swim to victory. Hey, we all have our niche right?

I went looking for a royalty-free picture of Jason and had no luck. Actually I had a hard time finding any kind of photo that didn’t feature Michael Phelps’ gaping maw prominently obscuring Lezak’s head. Poor Jason, he gets no love from the mainstream press photographers. That’s okay, the OC Metroblog loves him and that means something doesn’t it?

Doesn’t it?

Is this thing on?

Siva Afi Fa’a Samoa

So I took Maria’s recommendation and spent an evening at the Pearson Park Amphitheater in Anaheim watching the spec-freaking-tacular fire knife competition. If you haven’t taken time to stop in and see this event in its five year history, you’ll have to make sure and drop in next year for the sixth annual competition. It’s well worth the fifteen dollar admission price and features adorable kids doing impressive Samoan dances and some seriously buff warriors showing off their fire knife skills.

This particular contest was hosted by the actual descendants of Freddie Letuli, the man who literally invented the concept of adding fire to the traditional knife dances the warriors performed before and after battles. Guess there’s nothing like flames and sharp blades to celebrate your victory or to scare the crap out of your enemies?

The winners of the three divisions (pictured above) all performed remarkably well. Have you ever been to one of those tacky but awesome fakey luaus? Have you ever seen the attempt some of their dancers make at the fire knife? It’s often vanilla, slow and not nearly as thrilling as it should be, Not so at this competition! The “world championships” are held here in Anaheim and tonight we saw competitors from all across Polynesia, Asia and the United States.

The live drummers provided the soundtrack and the rhythmic pounding was down right infectious; just try not to tap your feet, I dare you! At two and a half hours, the program was just long enough without becoming overly extensive and numbing to your butt. While there, we checked out the tasty long-rice, kalua pork and the many polynesian vendors on site. Needless to say, we came away with full stomaches and more than a few trinkets.

What will tide us over till next year? Well there is always YouTube.

Orange County Olympians-Medal Update

Orange County has 47 Olympic Athletes at the 2008 Olympic Games. Congratulations are in order for all of those who qualified to compete on the worlds stage. I know it makes me proud to see our county represented.

Here is a list of the Orange County representatives who have medaled at the Olympics so far.

Aaron Piersol Men’s 100m Backstroke -Irvine (resident) Gold
Jason Lezak Men’s 4 x100m Freestyle Relay-Irvine (resident) Gold
Dara Torres Women’s 4x100m Freestyle Relay-Mission Viejo High (attended) Bronze

I will continue to update as the games go on.

Did you know we had that many representatives in the games? What are your favorite Olympic stories moments so far? Mine would have to be Jason Lezak’s final leg of the relay. Incredible. I got chills again thinking about it.
Please share.

Angels: The Best Team in Baseball

At least for now, anyway.  As we all know, even things that seem to be inevitable, aren’t always. Especially in baseball.

Shall we talk about the .622 win average, the best record in the majors?

Or how about the 11.5 games in first place?

Or Frank Rodriguez, with 45 saves already, looking to possibly break the record?

And hell, maybe nobody likes them.

But you know, it’s hard to win popularity contests when you are kicking everyone’s ass.

Chew on This

I had all these little tasty morsels of news nuggets just lying around my “possible-post” folder and none of them really warranted a full fledged entry all their own. So here’s a little round-up of bloggy items that caught my attention.

LC from OC

It has been “reported” that OC native and former star of Laguna Beach, Lauren Conrad has just had her clothing line dropped from all the Los Angeles Kitson boutiques. Such a shame. It always breaks me up inside when a spoiled celebutant from who never deserved a stupid clothing line to begin with suddenly finds that she is not very successful. Meanwhile, in the real world, people like me are trying to figure out how to afford a home located somewhere near the ass-end of Anaheim. A goal that seems almost unattainable. I guess we’re both failures.

Angels Fatigue

Guess what? People don’t like the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Shocking. A snazzy post over at the LA Metroblog outlines the reasons why. If there was ever a topic that was more befitting of an LA/OC crossover blog post the Angels would be it. So this begs the question, if everyone else hates the Angels what does Orange County think? I smell a poll coming on…

Bat-shit Crazy

We may (or may not) want to be saddled with the Angels in our county but there is no way in hell we ever wanted convicted Manson devotee and psycho killer “Susan Atkins to be freed to spend her last days with her husband in Orange County.” Luckily that isn’t gonna happen as “an 11-0 vote, [by] a state parole board on Tuesday denied a petition”. Let her stay in the 909 because we certainly don’t want her. Yucky poo.

O’Neill clothing recently flung open the doors to the company’s one and only flagship store located at the Anaheim GardenWalk. Oooooh Aaaaaaah. They’re awfully proud of their big fake “wave wall” – apparently they’ve never laid eyes on a Ron Jon? Also, while I loves me some surf wear, I’d rather see the classic Orange County original Pacific Sunwear open a flagship store instead of O’Neill. We’ll just call it local pride.

That’s all there is. Run along now children, there’s nothing more to see here…

NHL Suspends Owner Henry Samueli

I know the news is a day old, but the NHL suspended Ducks owner Henry Samueli after he pleaded guilty to backdating of options. While the team states that this “will not change the day-to-day operations of the team and the Samueli’s can still attend games as fans,” Henry cannot have a say in the operations of the team while under the leagues suspension. So readers, I ask you, should Henery Samueli remain as the owner of the Anaheim Ducks: [poll=8]

Catch the Titans on KDOC

With the Titans returning to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in thirty years, it would have been a tragedy if the game was not televised. Since UCLA is getting all of the coverage on Channel 2 (CBS), and USC is even getting television coverage, where were the Titans going to end up?

As it turns out, CBS reached a last minute deal with local station KDOC to air the Titans on Channel 56. Game time will be at 6:30pm, so for those of you stuck in traffic, don’t forget to set your DVR/TiVo before you leave for work.

Cal State Fullerton is also going to host watch parties at the following locations: Monitors and screens are to be set up in the Titan Student Union to allow students to watch the entire game thanks to KDOC in a group setting.

For Titans Fans on Campus

Titans living near campus are invited back for a game watch gathering at the Titan Student Union. Four big screens, comfortable seating, snacks and soft drinks will help make this game one to remember!

For Local Titans
A game watch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Brian’s Beer and Billiards located in the Albertson’s shopping center on the corner of Yorba Linda Blvd and Placentia. Brian’s Beer and Billiards is an official Titan Athletic corporate sponsor and will be airing the game on their five Plasma screen TV’s. Patrons must be 21 years of age or older with proper identification. (My personal favorite, they have a ton of Titan gear)
