Back Pocket Memory At Chain Reaction In Anaheim

*From left: Rob, Ian, Jason, Chris and Eddie.

Good morning kids!  I wanted to bring to your attention a rock show happening tomorrow night NEXT WEDNESDAY March 10, at Chain Reaction in Anaheim.  A band called Back Pocket Memory, or BPM as they’re also known, is going to playing a show at about 7pm.  Why am I telling you about some random rock show happening next Wednesday?  Well I know all these guys.  They’re from Burbank, where I grew up.  In fact I used to play in a band with a few of them before BPM started.  Maybe I’m biased, but I think these guys rock it out.  I’m fairly certain I’m not alone in that thought, as they have definitely proven themselves recently.  Last year they won a battle of the bands contest that took them to Germany to compete in a world showcase and this year they’ve been invited to play the SXSW Festival in Austin, TX!  They were also featured on NBC4LA.com’s local music spotlight last week.

I hope many of you can make it out there.  They will be opening the show, so there’s no excuse of “I don’t want to stay out too late.”  To get tickets, just show up the night of the show, or contact the band on their Facebook page.  The BPM members will have tickets for you for $10.  So…..go!  I’ll see you there!

Update!!  It’s NEXT week March 10….not tomorrow!

Boo to the City of Orange!

For actually taking to court a couple who is trying to reduce their water consumption.  They tore out their lawn and replaced it with fencing and drought-tolerant plants, but that didn’t appease the city.  Who (because I can’t believe it and I have to repeat it to myself) is now prosecuting them for not having a lawn!

In this age of being water-conscious, ridiculous!  As long as it isn’t endangering anyone and isn’t an eyesore, it is their private property to do with as they wish.

Good luck to the Has!

A Plea

Dear Something Corporate,

My husband and I were just listening to one of your best songs, “If U C Jordan” and we were wondering if you couldn’t just let bygones be bygones and get your original lineup back together?

Smooches,
Gina

Upated: They will be reunited and performing at Bamboozle Left at Anaheim Stadium this March! OMG!

FREE Pancakes!!!!

Tomorrow is IHOP’s National Pancake Day!!  That means from 7am-10pm, go to participating IHOP restaurants and you can receive a FREE short stack of pancakes!!!

Being that tomorrow is also the opening of Captain EO, you can go get your FREE pancakes across the street from the Disneyland Main Entrance at the IHOP on Harbor, then head straight into the park to see Captain EO!  (And yes I called to check, though usually that IHOP does not honor promos usually, they WILL be honoring that promo.)

*Also a little tip: If you park at that IHOP, you can run into the park for a bit and save yourself the Disney parking fees. :-)

Captain EO is back! February 23!!

So long, bad times.......Hello, good times!

That’s right kids.  The rumors were all true.  While it was originally thought that Captain EO would return for the special Halloween celebration Disneyland had in 2009, there simply wasn’t enough time to do it up right.  According to the Disney Parks Blog the official date for it’s return is this Tuesday February 23!!!  Also, according to the blog site, there will be a special Captain EO announcement on the Disneyland Twitter account next week.  So if you have Twitter, follow them to see what it is!

I was lucky enough to be in the first audience to see the movie since 1997 last week when they were doing some special cast member testing.  It sounds great and was so fun to watch in 3D again.  I think this will be a huge success due to fans who remember it from their younger days and also for the new generation who have never seen it before.  Also, be ready for a few new surprises that didn’t exist in the original run. :-)

Anyone going opening day??  Maybe we can have a good old fashion IRL (In Real Life) meetup!

Tanaka Farms

IMG_1491

A few weekends ago we visited Tanaka Farms in Irvine. We’ve been trying to support our local business with the added bonus of actually knowing where our food is coming from.

On one side you will see a produce “stand” stocked with fresh produce as well as honey, baked goods and jarred deliciousness.

On the otherside are the wagon rides thru the farm with family friendly information on how the fruits and vegetables grow.  You’ll get to pick your own and eat there.

See what else Tanaka farms has to offer after the break…

George’s Best Burgers: Simple honest burger dive in Anaheim

click to embiggen

This weekend I’m pretty much residing at the Anaheim Sport Center with my youngest who is in a basketball tournament.  The sport center is in one of the grittier sections of Anaheim (Anaheim Blvd and Cerritos).  What lightens up the trip is getting to have lunch and dinner over at George’s Best Burger’s.

George’s Best Burgers is a classic burger drive-in dive.  Its age is uncertain, but it is old, appears to date to at least the early 60’s.  It is in need of a new coat of paint but it is clean.  I firmly believe that the age of that well seasoned griddle and grill is why the burgers come out so frakkin’ tasty.  It is worlds away from the sterile main street of  “Downtown Disney” only a few blocks away and I like it that way.

Letter From a Disney Hater

While my poor infant daughter who has a cold attempts to nap despite having a stuffed-up nose, I came across this article in the LA Times.

And this perplexing letter:

What I expected: Magic.

What I found: It is a run-down amusement park. It feels nothing like the Disney resort in Orlando, Fla. I realize this park is older, but it is carny-like, even the newish California Adventure. I was looking forward to visiting Disneyland because of my affinity for Disney World and was sadly disappointed. There wasn’t any magic.

Tanya King, Los Angeles

Tanya! I am confuzled!

If you are from Los Angeles, how is it that you have visited Disney World before Disneyland? Are you a recent transplant?

And “carny-like?” As in old, dirty rides being manned by questionable men with even more questionable dental and/or bodily hygiene?

I wonder if she would think the Parthenon is unkempt and in need of some paint.

Tuesday is Fasting Day for Disney Workers

Listen, I am a pro-union person.  I believe that working people usually benefit from having a collective bargaining unit that pits them against management.  Because if anyone thinks that management is keeping the best interests of workers in mind, they are absolutely delusional.

But.

I think that Disney hotel workers and their Unite Here Local 11 are asking for an awful lot in some pretty lean times.  Very few people in this country are getting free healthcare, and I’m not understanding why they think they should, too.

My husband is being “asked” to take furlough days, and our healthcare costs (such as co-pays and prescription benefits) have recently risen.  However, we’re thankful that he even has a job, and excellent healthcare benefits to go with it.

I think a hunger strike is a bit drastic, and it hurts me to say it, but Local 11 needs to stop having their members working without a contract and sign up for the same benefits that all other Disney employees have.

FREE Disneyland 2fer Tickets!!!!

Are you on Twitter yet??  If not, now might be a good time to make an account, and if you are, you need to follow @Disneyland.  Not only do they let you know about deals around the resort and provide fun facts now and again, but at 12pm today they will be having their “first ticket giveaway” on Twitter!  I take “first ticket giveaway” to mean there will be others too.  So hurry up and add them and check in around noon for your chance to win.  I know I will cause my Annual Pass expires this month!

So hurry, cause it’s FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

It seems that Orange County beaches are being overrun by giant squid.

Chthulu would be proud?

Ok, maybe I just wrote this post because I couldn’t resist the title.

Target Misses the Mark

Dear Local Target Store,

Have I mentioned that I really do love you?  And that it hurts me to write this?

I was standing in line with my items that started out as a small list and ballooned (as always) to about a bazillion things.  I was tired and impatient, I’ll be honest.

I get to the checkout line, and I take a gander at the checkout person.  She looks as if she is about to die.  You know how people look when they are really sick and should be in bed, but instead for some reason showed up to work?  Well, that was her.

She croaks, “Hello” at me and then COUGHS ONTO HER HAND. I repeat ONTO HER HAND.  My first grader knows by now that you DO NOT COUGH INTO YOUR HAND you cough into the crook of your elbow.  He does it, I’ve seen him do it.  But for whatever reason, this chick decided it was too much effort. She then casually, or perhaps very slowly because she had a horrible illness residing within her that has rendered her limbs practically useless,  pumps a couple of drops of hand sanitizer onto her hands, rubs for about two seconds, and then PLACES HER GERMY HANDS ALL OVER MY STUFF.

Did they not just come out with a study that showed hand sanitizers do not in any way kill 99.9% of germs?  Why yes, they did.

What should I have done?  Should I have switched lines, even though she had already started on my things?  The thought crossed my mind, but it was too late.

So thanks a lot, sick Target employee.  I have a three month old with an immature immune system at home, the last thing I need is an onslaught of your germs.

And Target, I don’t know if your policies encourage sick employees to show up to work or not.  I hope they don’t. And you might want to give your employees a refresher course in proper hygiene.  Especially in the time of, you know, that little thing called swine flu.

Thanks bunches,

Gina

ZOMG! 2.5 Bil for High Speed Rail from Anaheim to SF

The ZOMG is actually more in reference to the giddiness I would feel at being able to hop on a train/monorail/whatever the hell they come up with and be in SF in something under three hours.

2.5 billion sounds impressive until you hear the figure the entire project is supposed to cost, which is somewhere in the realm of 42 billion.  Even if California matches dollar for dollar the federal money they receive, it’s still a paltry amount compared to the final total.  And uh, last time I checked, the state has a pretty gnarly deficit.

We’ve got a long way to go, apparently.

Before & After

I see Dave and I had a similar idea for a post although his post is more serious. I think my before and after photos only stress the importance of how quickly things can change.

During my daily – OK, almost daily – walk along the San Creek Juan Trail, last Tuesday the 12th, I took this photo of the flood control channel in anticipation of the rain that all of the local meteorologist were predicting.

The following is a photo I took yesterday afternoon, January 21, from roughly the same location. As you can see it’s quite a dramatic change.

More after the jump.

Supercross Is Back!!!

Cleanin' up for a good time.

Cleanin' up for a good time.

OK, well, actually Supercross came back 2 weeks ago for the first race of the season.  But as they have for the last several years, they will be running 3 separate weekends out of Anaheim Stadium.  This Saturday is A2 (Anaheim 2), and it is sure to be a MESSY race!  With record rainfall this last week, the dirt in the stadium will be saturated to the core, meaning the mud will be flying.  It may be terrible conditions for the riders, but it doesn’t get any better for the fans!

If you’ve never been to a Supercross race before, it is a great time.  Check out my post from last year’s Supercross event for pictures and a quick rundown of what goes on.  Tickets are still available for A2 this weekend and A3 in 3 weeks.

Doooooooo iiiiiiiiitttttttttt!!!!!!!!!!! (I know, I’m lame.)
