Various goings-on…

When stuck without a single thing to write about, I like to pour several topics into the blender and digest it with a straw… Did I say “topics”? I meant “bottles of booze“…

And who wouldn’t be driven to drink with the new report about apartment priced in the OC? (He said, segueing in the way people used to segue back in the day before Segues…) The average rate for a two-bedroom is supposed to climb up to over $1,500/month! I’m guessing that’s not in my home town: Santa Ana. I’m guessing that’s probably south county. So, I gotta ask, what is with you south county people? Why doesn’t the entire county tilt as masses of people move north? (Maybe it does and that’s why people like south county so much…)

Before someone points out to me that they love south county because it’s so safe, let me assure you, I know. According to the OCRegister, Laguna Woods was rated California’s safest city. Why? I’m guessing it’s because no one can find it. Have you seen Laguna Woods recently? No? Well, neither have I! I’ve seen signs for it but that’s it. I’m leaning towards it being a myth. When I look up Laguna Woods on a map (such as Yahoo), I get an area that looks distinctly like the border of Alisa Viejo and Laguna Hills. Sorry, folks. Laguna Woods, and websites such as this one, is just another elaborate hoax perpetrated on us, like the moon landing, Compassionate Conservatism, and Non-Fat American Cheese – it just don’t exist!

Mind you, that only means more people in north county, and I’m out here in Anaheim, watching all of you fill up the 91 freeway. In case there was any doubt, the OCTA held a hearing on Monday about 91 freeway congestion and only 25 people attended.

The rest were stuck on the freeway!

When I lived in Tustin in 2000, the rent on a 3 bedroom place was $1,565/month, and it’s since gone up to almost $2,000. My two bedroom place in Orange that I had last year was running around $1,100, and that was one of the lowest prices we found anywhere.

Just another reason I’m glad I was fortunate enough to buy when I did – it won’t be long at all before rents are far higher than my mortgage payment.

Laguna Woods in fact does exist — check yer Thomas Guide — but as far as being “safest,” you should never, ever believe those kinds of lists anyway. In my Irvine gated community, we’ve had to call the cops no less than four times in the past two years I’ve lived here, for everything from drinkin’-‘n’-druggin’ teenage parties to open drug dealing (gated communities are the perfect place to deal, turns out — no one suspects a thing) to hit-and-run car accidents. The Irvine cops rarely file reports on this stuff, too, because then their “safe city” claims would go bust and lower property values — and that’s exactly what one cop told me. But getting back to Laguna Woods: you can be sure an axe murderess or three live there, collecting social security till they decide to strike again…

Rich, that’d be a great news story if it’s true…

Guess what? Santa Ana. Two Bedroom. $1565 a month. Granted it’s in the somewhat “ritzier” section also called “South Coast Metro” (bordering Costa Mesa and SC Plaza), but the zip code is still SA. And we’re right across from some $700,000+ homes too. OC housing is insane.
